Herons slay Red Dragons, 17-11

GENEVA, N.Y. – The ninth-ranked William Smith College lacrosse team posted a convincing 17-11 victory over No. 5 SUNY-Cortland on Senior Day. The Herons got three goals and three assists apiece from junior midfielder Amanda Wynn (Loomis Chaffee/Aspen, Colo.) and sophomore attacker Gretchen Lasda (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) to snap the Red Dragons’ 10-game winning steak.

William Smith opened the scoring just 50 seconds into the contest on a goal by sophomore midfielder Shana Hawrylchak(Guilderland/Altamont, N.Y) and the Herons never trailed. Cortland hung with William Smith through the first 20 minutes as Red Dragon junior midfielder Lindsay Maynard (Nashua/Nashua, N.H.) scored to cut the Heron lead to 6-5, but couldn’t get any closer. William Smith ended the half on a 4-0 run, getting goals from junior midfielder Amanda Wynn (Loomis Chafee/Aspen, Colo.), junior midfielder Jackie Toner (Geneva/Geneva, N.Y.), senior midfielder Susanna Young (Cleveland/Cleveland Heights, Ohio), and junior attacker Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes/Doylestown, Pa.) for a 10-5 advantage.

The Red Dragons netted three of the first five goals of the second half to close to within 12-8 with 18:11 remaining, but the Herons used a 5-0 run to put the game away and grab a 17-8 lead. Toner, Lasda, and Young each scored, while Shea capped the run with back-to-back goals. Cortland scored the final three goals in the last 1:52, including senior midfielder Jeanna Angotti’s (C.W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.) tally with 12.5 seconds left, but it was too little too late as William Smith went on to the 17-11 victory.

Toner finished with four goals and an assist for the Herons, while Young and Shea added three goals apiece. In goal, sophomore Rebecca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) stopped 11 shots for the win.

Senior midfielder Brooke VandeWalker (Cicero-North Syracuse/North Syracuse, N.Y.) led Cortland (11-2) with three goals and three assists. Angotti finished with two goals and an assist and senior midfielder Julie Gerhartz (Penfield/Penfield, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Sara Gorman (Lindenhurst/Lindenhurst, N.Y.) each contributed two goals. Senior goalkeeper Trish Kesicki (Half Hollow Hills East/Dix Hills, N.Y.) made six saves in 55 minutes.

William Smith (11-1) returns to action at Rensselaer on April 26, at 4 p.m., and wraps up the regular season at Vassar at 2 p.m., on April 27.
