GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith lacrosse team improved to 3-0 this afternoon with a 13-8 victory over visiting Nazareth College. Sophomore Gretchen Lasda (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) led all scorers with six points on three goals and three assists.

The contest was the first Division III women's lacrosse game streamed live on the Internet. i2sports.com will archive the game on-line at: i2sports.com/events/hws/20020323wlax

The Herons, ranked sixth in the latest Warrior/Inside Lacrosse Power Poll, jumped out to a 4-1 lead less than eight minutes into the contest thanks to a pair of goals from Lasda and junior Jackie Toner (Geneva/Geneva, N.Y.). Toner finished with four goals and an assist.

The Golden Flyers (2-2) clawed back into the game with a three-goal burst, capped off by senior Ellen Fanning’s (DeSales/Geneva, N.Y.) first of two goals on the afternoon.

William Smith responded to the threat with three straight goals of their own to take a 7-4 lead into halftime. Senior Susanna Young (Cleveland/Cleveland Heights, Ohio) followed a Lasda tally with two of her own.

After the break, the Herons used another 4-1 run to build a comfortable 11-5 lead. Sophomore Nikki Traino (West Genesee/Syracuse, N.Y.) and Toner each scored twice during the run. Fanning scored the Nazareth goal, batting a pass, more than catching and throwing, past William Smith sophomore Rebecca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.).

Splain finished with 10 saves to earn the victory. Senior Taryn Wineburg (Auburn/Auburn, N.Y.) made 11 stops for Nazareth.

Senior Allison Roberts (Irondequoit/Rochester, N.Y.) led Nazareth with four points on a goal and three assists.

The Golden Flyers scored three of the last five goals of the contest, but could get no closer than the final five-point margin of victory.

With the victory, the Herons extend their current win streak to seven games, dating back to last season, and to three straight over Nazareth. Junior Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes/Doylestown, Pa.) extended her consecutive games with at least one point to 33 with a pair of assists.

William Smith returns to action at 4 p.m., on March 29, when the Herons travel to Canton, N.Y., for their UCAA opener against St. Lawrence University.
