William Smith loses close battle with Ithaca

April 6, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College lacrosse team was able to tally just one goal in the second half, losing to 12th-ranked Ithaca College, 6-5, this afternoon in the second round of the annual Heron Draw. The Herons, ranked sixth in the nation, fall to 5-2 on the season, while the Bombers improve to 7-2 for the year.

William Smith got on board just 1:30 into the game when junior Gretchen Lasda (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) took an Alexandra Herter (Brooks School/Topsfield, Mass.) pass and fired it past the Bomber goalie. Michelle Schlegel (Cicero-North Syracuse/Liverpool, N.Y) tied the game up for Ithaca seven minutes later with the first of her three goals on the afternoon.

Senior Jackie Toner (Geneva/Geneva, N.Y.) put the Herons ahead again 37 seconds later off an assist from Lasda. Bomber midfielder Mariah Casserly (Canton/Canton, N.Y.) would tie the game once again at the 18:18 mark, but William Smith responded with goals from Toner and junior Shana Hawrylchak (Guilderland/Altamont, N.Y.) to close out the opening stanza with a 4-2 lead.

Senior attacker Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes/Doylestown, Pa.) stretched the Herons’ lead to three on a free position shot 4:47 into the second session. That would be William Smith’s lone goal of the half as Ithaca ran off four unanswered goals in the next 10 minutes for the victory.

Pacing the Heron offense was Toner with two goals, while Lasda chipped in a goal and an assist. Schlegel led all scorers with three tallies, while Casserly netted two for the Bombers. In goal for the Herons, junior Becca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) went the distance making two stops. Ithaca goalie Angela Marathakias (Albany Academy for Girls/Ravena, N.Y.) grabbed seven saves to earn the victory.

The Herons return to action on April 11, when they travel to UCAA rival and ninth-ranked Union College at 4 p.m.
