Lasda, Splain pick up UCAA weekly honors

Gretchen Lasda

Becca Splain

April 5, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College senior attacker Gretchen Lasda (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) scored three of the game’s first four goals, as the eighth-ranked Herons defeated No. 14 Ithaca College 12-7 in women’s lacrosse action on McCooey Field this afternoon. Her five goals today gave her a total of 11 points for the weekend on eight goals and three assists.

Sophomore Jessica Tanner (Guilderland/Schenectady, N.Y.) broke up an Ithaca pass after the opening draw and found a wide open Lasda streaking down the field. Lasda collected the toss and fired her shot over the shoulder of goalie Angela Marathakis (Albany Academy for Girls/Albany, N.Y.) for the 1-0 Heron lead just 29 seconds into the game.

The Bombers evened the score five minutes later when junior Mariah Casserly (Canton/Canton, N.Y.) capitalized on a Lindsey Breese (Geneva/Geneva, N.Y.) pass.

It was Lasda’s show after that as she tallied the next two goals within 34 seconds of each other putting the Herons ahead for good. Senior attacker Brighde Dougherty (Manasquan/Sea Girt, N.J.) changed up the scoring for William Smith with her 16th goal of the season midway through the half, before Lasda notched her fourth goal of the half.

Down 6-1 with 10 minutes left in the first session, Casserly fired in two goals towards the end of the half, to make it a four-goal game, 7-3, at the break.

Senior Lindsay Teague (Geneva/Geneva, N.Y.) opened the scoring for the Herons in the second half to make it 8-3, while Tanner gave the Herons their biggest lead of the afternoon at the 1:51 mark with her first goal of the day.

The Bombers cut the lead to as few as four goals late in the game, but the Herons wouldn’t let the Bombers get any closer. Casserly led all Ithaca scorers with four points on three goals and an assist.

William Smith held a slight 26-25 advantage on shots and was 2-for-3 on free position shots, while the Bombers converted just 1-of-9 of their free position opportunities.

In the goal senior Becca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) was outstanding with 13 stops, while Marathakis finished the afternoon with nine saves.

The Herons return to action on April 9, hosting Skidmore College at 4 p.m., on McCooey Field.
