Lasda, Splain repeat as UCAA award winners

Becca Splain

April 12, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—For the second consecutive week William Smith College seniors Gretchen Lasda (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.), and Becca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) were named the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association’s Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Performer of the Week and Defensive Performer of the Week, respectively.

Lasda continued her stellar offensive play this past weekend with 10 goals and two assists for 12 points in a pair of crucial league victories for the Herons. She tallied five goals and two assists in a resounding 14-2 win over 16th-ranked and unbeaten Skidmore College. The following afternoon, Lasda turned in her third consecutive five-goal outing in a 14-8 win against first place Union College. In addition to scoring over a third of the team’s goals, she won eight draw controls and picked up four ground balls.

Lasda has scored at least five points in each of William Smith’s seven previous games and netted at least five goals in five of the six past outings. For the season, she has racked up a career-high 38 goals and 12 assists for a league-best 50 points.

Splain turned in two stellar performances in the cage to help the Herons to their 2-0 week and up her career wins total to 51. On Friday against Skidmore, she saw everything the Thoroughbreds threw in her direction, making a career-high 17 saves and allowing just two goals. The next afternoon was much of the same for the four-year starter, as she stopped 13 shots against the Dutchwomen. Splain finished the weekend with a .750 save percentage and a 5.00 goals against average and picked up 12 ground balls and caused two turnovers.

Overall, Splain sports a league-best .631 save percentage, a 6.44 goals against average, and has turned in six double digit save performances.

The Herons continue their UCAA schedule on April 13, traveling to Hamilton College for a 5 p.m., game.
