GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College senior Brigid Lynch (Manhasset/Manhasset, N.Y.) recently was named the 2003 Defensive Player of the Year by Warrior/Inside Lacrosse. Joining Lynch on the All-America first-team was classmate Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes/Doylestown, Pa.), while senior Amanda Wynn (Loomis Chaffee/Aspen, Colo.) earned second-team honors.

Each of the three players also were named to the IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-America teams earlier this week. They helped William Smith compile a 56-9-0 record, three NCAA appearances, and an ECAC Championship over the past four seasons.

Anchoring a defense that posted a stingy 6.37 goals against average in 2003, Lynch led the team in caused turnovers with 25, while her 14 points ranked eighth on the team and tops among all defenders. A standout on the field hockey team as well, she was second on the lacrosse squad in ground balls with 66. Selected to the UCAA All-Tournament team, Lynch amassed 164 ground balls and 119 caused turnovers during her four seasons at William Smith.

A three-time All-American, Shea led the Herons in scoring in 2003 for the fourth consecutive season with 52 goals and 16 assists. Scoring at least one point in every game she played, the two-time UCAA Player of the Year’s 89 assists and 282 points rank second on the Heron career lists, while her 193 career goals is fourth all-time at William Smith. She also was selected to participate in the North-South Senior All-Star game.

A mainstay in the William Smith midfield, Wynn was third on the team in points with 25 goals and 12 assists. She was selected to the NCAA All-Tournament Team after recording three goals, three assists, and six ground balls in William Smith’s run to the semifinal round. A two-time All-American, the center draw specialist was selected to play in the North-South All-Star game. Wynn closed out her four-year career with 95 goals, 55 assists, and 109 draw controls.

The Herons finished the 2003 season with a 16-3 record, tying the mark for most wins in a season. Capturing its first UCAA Championship, William Smith advanced to the NCAA Semifinals for the 11th time in the program’s history before falling to two-time defending champion Middlebury College.
