William Smith to play St. Mary's in NCAA Tournament

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College lacrosse team received its 15th berth into the NCAA Tournament today after winning the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Championship. The Herons will travel to Salisbury, Md. where they will play ninth-ranked St. Mary’s College on May 10. The game time is tentatively set for 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $3 for general admission, $2 for children 12 and under and students with proper ID.

Under the leadership of longtime Head Coach Pat Genovese, seventh-ranked William Smith (14-3) has advanced to the semifinals 10 times and to the finals in five of those. The winningest coach in Division III women’s lacrosse, Genovese sports a 293-102-1 career record.

“We’re excited to be able to play in the tournament again,” said Genovese. “It’s exciting to play new opponents that come from competitive programs.”

The Heron offense is led by senior Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes/Doylestown, Pa.) with 44 goals and 16 assists and junior Gretchen Lasda (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) with 22 goals and 27 helpers. Shea is currently tied for second on the career points (274) and assists (89) list with 274 and fourth with 185 career goals.

Defensively, junior goalie Becca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) sports a 12-2 record this season while her 5.33 goals against average as it stands now is second-best in William Smith history.

The winner of the game will advance to the NCAA Quarterfinal game on May 11.
