Notre Dame grad joins Heron lacrosse staff

Lael O'Shaughnessy

September 8, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College Lacrosse Head Coach Pat Genovese recently announced the appointment of Lael O’Shaughnessy as assistant coach for the 2004 season. A 2001 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, O’Shaughnessy was a three-time All-Region selection for the Fighting Irish lacrosse team.

“From an exceptional playing career to a strong coaching background, Lael has excelled at every aspect of the game,” Genovese said. “I’m very excited to work with someone so talented and experienced.”

Notre Dame’s career record holder for goals (128), assists (68), and points (196), O’Shaughnessy started 56 of 57 games during her career. She became the first Fighting Irish women’s lacrosse player to earn All-Region honors following her breakthrough sophomore season. O’Shaughnessy made a mockery of the dreaded “sophomore jinx,” scoring a season record 50 goals and 19 assists for a record 69 points. She also tied the Notre Dame record for points in a game with nine (6-3) against the University of Connecticut.

As a senior, O’Shaughnessy led the team in scoring for the third straight season and was named first-team All-BIG EAST and first-team All-Region. The Notre Dame National Monogram Club selected the two-time team captain the 2001 Most Valuable Player.

A native of Alexandria, Va., O’Shaughnessy earned a bachelor’s degree in American Studies in May of 2001. In 2002, she served as an assistant coach for West Springfield High School in Springfield, Va. Following a successful season with the Spartans, she expanded her coaching resume at The Harpeth Hall School in Nashville, Tenn. Last year, O’Shaughnessy coached The Harpeth Hall varsity and junior varisty lacrosse teams, as well as the Honeybears’ middle school basketball and soccer programs.

The William Smith lacrosse team is coming off an appearance in the NCAA Semifinals, the program’s 11th final four since 1987. The Herons return 20 letterwinners, including seven starters, from the 2003 squad. The defending UCAA Champions will begin their 2004 slate at home on March 24, against Nazareth.
