Six Herons earn IWLCA All-Region honors
May 20, 2003 GENEVA, N.Y.Six William Smith College lacrosse players were recently named to the Intercollegiate Womens Lacrosse Coaches Association All-New York regional teams. Seniors Brigid Lynch (Manhasset/Manhasset, N.Y.), Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes/Doylestown, Pa.), Jackie Toner (Geneva/Geneva, N.Y.), and Amanda Wynn (Loomis Chaffee/Aspen, Colo.) were all named to the first team, while juniors Becca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) and Gretchen Lasda (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) both earned second-team honors. A 2003 first-team All-UCAA selection, Lynch helped anchor a defense that posted a 6.37 goals against average this season. She led the team in caused turnovers with 25, while her 14 points ranked eighth on the team and tops among all defenders. A standout on the field hockey team as well, she was second on the lacrosse squad in ground balls with 66. Selected to the UCAA All-Tournament team, Lynch and her classmates helped lead William Smith to a four-year record of 56-9-0. The 2003 UCAA Player of the Year, Shea led all scorers this season with 52 goals and 16 assists. Scoring at least one point in every game of her career, the two-time conference player of the year ranks second at William Smith in career assists (89) and points (282), and fourth on the career goals (193) list. A two-time All-American, she scored at least two points in all but two games this season. She closes out her career with a 59-6-0 record, helping the Herons to appearances in three NCAA Tournaments and an ECAC Championship. Shea was recently selected to play in the North-South Senior All-Star Game. A 2003 second-team All-UCAA honoree, Toner was fourth on the team in points with 26 goals and two assists, finishing her career with 99 and 23, respectively.. She led William Smith with 28 draw controls and ranked third with 51 ground balls. She also was selected to the UCAA All-Tournament team. Garnering first-team All-UCAA accolades, Wynn ranked third on the team in points with 25 goals and 12 assists. She was named the UCAA Tournaments Most Outstanding Player after netting five goals in the two contests. Selected to the North-South Senior All-Star Game, Wynn racked up 95 goals, 55 assists, and 109 draw controls during her four-year career. She also was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team after recording three goals, three assists, and six ground balls during the NCAA Championships. A three-year starter in goal for the Herons, Splain posted a 14-3-0 record in 2003, pushing her to second on the career wins list with 43. Her 6.51 goals against average ranks fifth on the single-season list, while her .619 save percentage in 2003 ranks eighth all time. A second-team All-UCAA selection, her 426 career saves ranks fifth in William Smith history. A second-team All-UCAA selection, Lasda ranked second on the team in points with 24 goals and 30 assists. She became just the third player in the programs history to notch 30 or more assists, while her career total of 69 ranks sixth. A three-year starter, Lasda picked up a team-high 71 ground balls this season, more than her previous two seasons combined. The Herons finished the 2003 season with a 16-3 record, tying the mark for most wins in a season. Capturing the UCAA title for the first time, William Smith advanced to the NCAA Semifinals for the 11th time in the programs history before falling to two-time defending champion Middlebury College. |
