Splain collects ECAC Goalkeeper of the Week honor

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College senior Becca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) recently was named the Eastern Colleges Athletic Conference Upstate Lacrosse Goalkeeper of the Week. Also selected as the UCAA Defensive Performer of the Week, she helped the Herons capture the regular season UCAA title and the top seed in the conference tournament with 21 saves in a pair of victories this past weekend.

Splain collected nine saves in a 15-7 win over Vassar College for her record 56th career victory. The following afternoon at Rensselaer she stopped 12 Red Hawks’ shots, including three on free position attempts, to come away with a 10-9 triple overtime win. For the weekend, Splain posted a 7.44 goals against average, a .568 save percentage, and picked up three ground balls.

Collecting a career-high 171 saves this season, she ranks 10th in the nation in save percentage (.629) and 12th in goals against average (6.62).

The eighth-ranked Herons will play again on May 1, hosting fourth-seed Skidmore at 11 a.m. on McCooey Field. Second-seeded Union College will take on No. 3 Hamilton College in the second semifinal at 2 p.m. The winners of those games will advance to the title tilt on May 2, at noon, on McCooey Field.
