5 Heron laxers named to UCAA All-Academic squad

GENEVA, N.Y. – Five members of the William Smith lacrosse team were recently named to the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association's Spring All-Academic team. Sophomore midfielder Shana Hawrylchak (Guilderland/Altamont, N.Y.), sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.), junior midfielder Jackie Toner (Geneva/Geneva, N.Y.), senior goalkeeper Amy Bowen (Concord Carlisle/Carlisle, Mass.), and senior midfielder Susanna Young (Cleveland/Cleveland Heights, Ohio) represent the Herons.

Hawrylchak has started all 14 of William Smith's games this season, scoring 13 goals and four assists for 17 points. She is second on the team in ground balls with 43, and fourth in caused turnovers with 17. In two seasons as a Heron, Hawrylchak has scored 20 goals and nine assists and collected 66 ground balls.

Splain has started 31 straight contests in goal, including every game this season. She is 13-1 in 2002, with a goals against average of 6.43 and a .574 save percentage. In her career, Splain is 28-3 with a goals against average of 6.40 and a .597 save percentage in 1,716 minutes.

Toner, a chemistry major, is currently fourth on the team in scoring with 26 goals and 14 assists for 40 points, while picking up 30 ground balls. She needs just 10 points (70g-20a-90pts) to reach the 100-point plateau.

Bowen, a dual major in European Studies and French, is serving as one of the Herons tri-captains this season. In six appearances this season, she's posted a 9.52 goals against average and .474 save percentage. In 151 career minutes, Bowen has an 8.34 goals against average and a .512 save percentage.

Young, a studio art major, has registered 22 goals and three assists for 25 points and is second of the team in ground balls with 48. In her career, she has scored 54 goals and assisted on 5 others for 59 points, while collecting 148 ground balls. Young has played in all of William Smith's 61 games, starting 59, in her four seasons.

Honored student-athletes must have at least a sophomore athletic and academic standing, a minimum 3.20 grade point average, and must be a major contributor to their team.

The Herons, currently ranked ninth in the country, closed the regular season at 13-1 overall, finishing second in the UCAA with a 7-1 mark. William Smith will now await the NCAA Selection Committee's decision on May 5, to find out about a postseason berth.
