Shea, Splain earn UCAA honors; Herons ranked 4th in IWLCA Poll

GENEVA, N.Y. –Two William Smith College lacrosse players were recognized by the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association after guiding the Herons to a 3-0 week. Junior attacker Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes/Doylestown, Pa.) is the UCAA Player of the Week, while sophomore Rebecca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) is the league’s Goaltender of the Week.

Shea totaled 16 points in William Smith’s three victories last week. She scored a game-high five goals, including the game-winner, and recorded an assist in the Herons’ 14-2 victory over defending UCAA champion Hamilton College on April 3. Three days later she netted four goals and two assists in William Smith’s 15-3 first round Heron Draw win over Denison University. On April 7, Shea scored four goals to lead the Herons past Ithaca College in the second round of the tournament. The junior leads the team in scoring with 27 goals and 15 assists for 42 points, averaging 5.25 ppg this season.

Splain started all three wins last week, making 24 saves and, posting a goals against average of 4.19 and a .667 save percentage. She gave up just two goals to the Continentals and one against the Big Red. The sophomore is perfect in eight starts this season with an overall goals against average of 5.91 and a .593 save percentage. Splain has started 25 consecutive games for the Herons with a career record of 23-2.

William Smith (8-0, 3-0 UCAA), ranked fourth in the latest IWLCA poll, hosts UCAA foe Union College on April 12, at 4 p.m. The Herons topped the Dutchwomen 11-7 in Schenectady last season.
