William Smith lacrosse 4th in IWLCA preseason poll

February 14, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College lacrosse team will begin the 2003 season ranked fourth in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association preseason poll. Defending national champion Middlebury College sits atop the poll, while Amherst College and the College of New Jersey rounded out the top three.

Coming off a 14-2 season and a trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals, the Herons return 10 starters, including their top four scorers from 2002. The Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year and two-time third-team All-American senior Megan Shea (Mountain Lakes/Doylestown, Pa.) heads the William Smith attack, netting 53 goals and assisting on 24 others last season. Junior Gretchen Lasda (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) and senior Amanda Wynn (Loomis Chaffee/Aspen, Colo.) also return after notching 61 and 52 points, respectively, in 2002.

Defensively, the Herons are led by third-team All-American selection Brigid Lynch (Manhasset/Manhasset, N.Y.). A tenacious defender, she recorded 42 caused turnovers, more than any two of her teammates combined, while netting 12 goals. Junior Rebecca Splain (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, Vt.) returns in goal for William Smith after posting a 6.89 goals against average, garnering second-team All-Region recognition.

The Herons open their schedule on March 11, in Panama City, Fla., against Division II Lock Haven. The game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
