Soccer ranked 5th in NSCAA poll
October 18, 2005
GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College soccer team is ranked fifth in the latest edition of the Division III National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas poll. Messiah College remains in the No. 1 position followed by The College of New Jersey, Macalester College and Virginia Wesleyan College.
The Herons (11-0-1, 4-0-1 Liberty League) are perched atop the Division III New York regional poll and are enjoying their best start since the 1993 squad also went 11-0-1.
William Smith recorded its 11th victory of the season on Oct. 15 by defeating Nazareth College, which is ranked sixth in the region, 1-0. Sophomore forward Johanna Murphy (Amity/Woodbridge, Conn.) netted the game-winner off an assist from classmate Laura Burnett-Kurie (Oyster River/Durham, N.H.). Junior goalkeeper Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Chittenango, N.Y.) turned away six Golden Flyers shots to pad her Division III leading .970 save percentage.
Earlier in the week, Burnett-Kurie registered a pair of goals as the Herons’ downed RIT 2-0. She leads the Liberty League in points (27), goals (12), and points per game (2.25).
William Smith is back in action at 4 p.m. on Oct. 21 when the Herons visit Vassar (3-6-1, 2-2-0).
