GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith sophomore striker Laura Burnett-Kurie (Oyster River/Durham, N.H.) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Women’s Soccer Academic All-America® third-team today. She is the seventh student-athlete from Hobart and William Smith Colleges to be named to the prestigious national teams.

A first-team All-Liberty League pick, Burnett-Kurie led the conference in goals (18) and game-winning goals (7) and tied for the lead in points (41). The six-time Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week tied the William Smith records for goals and points in a game with four goals in a win over Clarkson this year. Burnett-Kurie is a 2005 Liberty League All-Academic team selection and was the 2004 Liberty League Rookie of the Year. She boasts 24 career goals and eight career assists for 56 points. Burnett-Kurie is a psychology major.

Burnett-Kurie joins an exclusive group of Herons. Only nine previous William Smith student-athletes have been named Academic All-Americans and only two soccer players (Julie Perry ’89 in 1988 and 1989 and Kim Rausch ’98 in 1998).

The Academic All-America® Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America; a 2,000-member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
