Union upends Allegheny in Heron Cup
September 11, 2004
GENEVA, N.Y.—Union College scored a pair of goals in the opening 14 minutes and never looked back, beating Allegheny College 2-0 in women’s soccer action this afternoon in the annual Heron Cup at William Smith College.
It didn’t take long for the 15th-ranked Dutchwomen to get on the board, when in the seventh minute junior Caitlin Cuozzo (King Phillip Regional/Norfolk, Mass.) lofting shot snuck under the crossbar and past the near post for a 1-0 Union lead. Senior Molly Flanagan (Loomis Chaffee/Simsbury, Conn.) assisted on the score.
Seven minutes later junior Erika Eisenhut (Mohawk/Mohawk, N.Y.) found an open Cassandra Mariani (Morris Catholic/Boonton, N.J.) who fired a shot over Allegheny goalie Beth Van Parys’ (Villa Maria Academy/Erie, Pa.) head.
That would be all the Dutchwomen would need as their defense stifled any Gator attack in the second half. Union held a 13-3 advantage on shots and won the corner kick battle 3-0.
In goal, Julie Gawronski (Dunkirk/Dunkirk, N.Y.) had two stops for the Dutchwomen, while Van Parys also had two for the 24th-ranked Gators.
Allegheny will meet up with Heron Cup host and 14th-ranked William Smith tomorrow at 11 a.m., while Union will go up against Geneseo in the final match of the weekend at 2 p.m.
