CLINTON, N.Y.—The fifth-ranked William Smith College soccer team defeated conference rival Hamilton College 3-0 this afternoon. Sophomore forward Johanna Murphy (Amity/Woodbridge, Conn.) netted a pair of first-half goals to lead the Herons’ offense, which outshot the Continentals 11-8. The win improves William Smith’s overall record to 8-0-0 and 3-0-0 in the Liberty League, while Hamilton falls to 5-1-0 and 2-1-0 in conference action.

Murphy headed in her third goal of the season at the 14:34 mark, staking the Herons to a 1-0 advantage. Seraphine Hamilton (Peddie School/Trenton, N.J.) generated the scoring opportunity off a corner kick.

That would be all the offense William Smith would need as the Herons’ defense stifled the Continentals’ offensive attack.

In the 18th minute, Murphy gathered a pass from Laura Burnett-Kurie (Oyster River/Durham, N.H.) and ripped her second goal of the contest past Hamilton goalkeeper Kate Plummer. Plummer turned away a trio of William Smith offerings in 45 minutes of action.

Steph Gridley (Auburn/Auburn, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring by converting on a Continental turnover. She beat Hamilton goaltender Caitlin McGilley to record her second goal of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Chittenango, N.Y.) made a pair of saves to record her eighth consecutive shutout victory of the season.

The Herons return to the friendly confines of Cozzens Field on Oct. 7, hosting conference foe Skidmore at 4 p.m.
