GENEVA, N.Y.—Sophomore forward Laura Burnett-Kurie (Oyster River/Durham, N.H.) netted the game-winner in the fifth minute of overtime to lead the fourth-ranked William Smith College soccer team to 1-0 victory over conference rival Skidmore College this afternoon on a rain-soaked Cozzens Field. The win improves William Smith to an overall record of 9-0-0, 4-0-0 Liberty League, while Skidmore falls to 10-2-0, 2-1-0.
Burnett-Kurie ran onto a through ball from senior midfielder Steph Gridley (Auburn/Auburn, N.Y.) just inside the 18-yard box and ripped the decisive goal past Skidmore goaltender Liza Mills (Ward Melville/Setauket, N.Y.) into the lower left corner of the cage. William Smith’s offensive catalyst registered her ninth goal of the season and fourth game-winner. Mills turned away 10 William Smith offerings.
The William Smith defense held the Thoroughbreds to just four shots, all saved by Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Chittenango, N.Y.). Dudley stretched her unbeaten and unscored-upon streak to nine consecutive games, which moves her into third place for the longest scoreless streak in school history.
The Herons return to action on Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. when they host Union College. The Dutchwomen (8-1-1, 3-0-0) posted a 3-0 win at Hamilton College this afternoon.
