Herons edged in NCAA Tournament, 1-0

November 12, 2005

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The ninth ranked William Smith College soccer team fell to 14th ranked University of Rochester 1-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament this afternoon on College Park Field.

Rochester junior Emily Urbanczyk netted the game-winning goal in the 64th minute off a crossing pass from Mary Welsh. Urbanczyk broke in behind the Herons defense and tucked her fourth goal of the season inside the lower left post.

The Herons had their chances right up to the last minute. William Smith had two shots off a corner kick with just 15 seconds to play. Sophomore Laura Burnett-Kurie (Oyster River/Durham, N.H.) had a shot at the far right post that was blocked by a Rochester defender. Senior Kate Warner (Gould Academy/Glouster, Mass.) gathered the rebound and shot with just two seconds to play, but it was sent wide of the left post.

Heron junior goalkeeper Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Chittenango, N.Y.) turned in another strong performance, recording seven saves. Senior Adrianne Hulchanski turned away three shots to record the win.

The Herons end the season with a 15-2-1 record, the program’s best mark since the 2001 squad went 17-2-1. It is William Smith’s 22nd consecutive winning season and the ninth straight time the Herons have won at least 13 matches.
