Herons ranked 21st in preseason poll

August 25, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College soccer team will start the 2004 season ranked 21st in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas® Division III preseason poll. The Herons move up three spots after finishing 2003 ranked 24th. Defending national champion Oneonta tops the list, while University of Chicago and DePauw University round out the top three.

The Herons are coming of a 15-5-2 season in which they captured the ECAC Division III Northeast Championship. Losing just three seniors to graduation, the Herons return nine starters and 16 letterwinners and are poised for a return to the NCAA Tournament for a record 17th time.

William Smith opens its 25th season on Sept. 1, hosting rival Cortland State at 4 p.m., on Cozzens Field. The Herons will test themselves against some of the best the following weekend, Sept. 4-5, traveling to play top-ranked Oneonta and a perennially strong Gettysburg team. William Smith also will face ranked opponents Allegheny College (23rd) and Liberty League rival Union College (10th).
