GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith Director of Athletics Deb Steward recently announced the appointment of Charles “Chaz” Allen to serve as an assistant coach for the Heron soccer team. No stranger to the program, Allen directed the 2005 William Smith junior varsity team.

“Chaz will be a tremendous addition to the Heron Athletic Department,” Steward said. “He has outstanding technical and tactical soccer knowledge and also offers a wealth of administrative skills to the department.”

Previously the head coach of the Cayuga Community College men’s soccer team, Allen oversaw the Spartans meteoric development from a first-year program in 2001 to the Mid State Athletic Conference (MSAC) Championship in 2003 and 2004. Allen’s 2004 CCC squad was his most impressive, posting a 21-2-1 record, leading the nation in goals scored (112), and ranking second in goals allowed (12). That Spartan team boasted one All-American and four All-Region players, while he was honored with the MSAC Coach of the Year Award.

Allen, who currently lives in Auburn, is an Olympic development coach with the New York State West Youth Soccer Association and is the founder and director of the Cayuga Soccer Club, a youth development program.

As a player, Allen was a player-coach for Epson Salts of the semiprofessional London League. He led the Salts in scoring in three straight seasons, while helping his side to the Division 2 championship in 1993 and the Division 1 title in 1994.

A 1989 graduate of Ithaca College, Allen holds a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications management. He also has a U.S. Soccer Federation C License.
