GENEVA, N.Y.—Two William Smith College soccer players were named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Women’s Soccer Team. Junior forward Laura Burnett-Kurie (Oyster River/Durham, N.H.) was named to the first-team, while senior goalkeeper Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Chittenango, N.Y.) was named to the second-team. Both Herons received the same awards last year as well.

The 2006 Women’s Soccer Liberty League Player of the Year, Burnett-Kurie leads the league in goals (10) and points (23). She led William Smith to a 10-5-1 regular season record, and a 6-1-0 conference mark. Burnett-Kurie boasts 34 career goals and 11 assists for 79 points. She was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America third team in 2005, and will advance to the national ballot again this year.

A four-time All-Liberty League selection, Dudley has been a solid presence in goal throughout her career. She has tallied 43 career shutouts and allowed just 38 goals in 75 games for a record of 52-15-7. One of the top goalkeepers in the nation, Dudley owns a 0.50 career goals against average. This season she has allowed only eight goals, and just two in conference play.

To earn a place on the Academic All-District teams, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade point average, be a starter or significant reserve, and be at least a sophomore in academic standing. College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selects eight Academic All-District teams and chooses the Academic All-America teams from the eight District first-teams.

CoSIDA selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women’s volleyball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s track & field/cross country, women’s track & field/cross country, men’s at-large, and women’s at-large. A first-team, second-team, and third-team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions.

The No. 2 Herons will take on No. 6 St. John Fisher College in the semifinal round of the ECAC Tournament on Nov. 11. The game is set to begin at 11 a.m. at Skidmore College.
