Herons climb to No. 4 in Region

October 17, 2006

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith soccer team climbed one spot in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) rankings to No. 4 in the New York State Region. The NSCAA rankings are voted on weekly by coaches across the country.

The Herons improved their overall record to 9-3-1 last week after downing RIT 3-0, and tying Nazareth 1-1 in double-overtime. Junior Laura Burnett-Kurie (Oyster River/Durham, N.H.), first-year Julie Boardman-Brann (Niskayuna/Niskayuna, N.Y.), and sophomore Ali Art (Herricks/Manhasset Hills, N.Y.) each scored against the Tigers, while sophomore Katie Compton (The Loomis Chaffee School/West Hartford, Conn.) connected on a penalty kick against the Golden Flyers. Burnett-Kurie, the Liberty League leader in goals (10) and points (23), netted her first game-winner of the year, while Boardman-Brann added her second goal of the season and was named the Liberty League Co-Rookie of the Week for her efforts. A defender, Art recorded her first career goal.

Senior goalkeeper Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Chittenango, N.Y.) (9-3-1) registered her fifth shutout of the season in the win over RIT, and stopped three shots against Nazareth. She ranks second in the league in goals against average (0.46).

The Herons will travel to Skidmore for a league match on Oct. 20 at 4 p.m.
