Herons hold steady at No. 5

October 3, 2006

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith soccer team is ranked No. 5 in the New York Region for the third straight week by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). The NSCAA rankings are voted on weekly by coaches across the country.

The Herons handed league rival Hamilton College its first loss of the season last week to improve their overall record to 6-3-0, and remain undefeated in league play (3-0-0). William Smith defeated the Continentals 3-1, with senior midfielder Heather Phillip (Cayuga/King Ferry, N.Y.) leading the way. Phillip scored the game-winning goal and added an assist, earning the Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week Award for her efforts.

Also against Hamilton, junior Laura Burnett-Kurie (Oyster River/Durham, N.H.) netted her league-leading seventh goal of the season, while first-year Hannah Vaughn (Marcellus/Marcellus, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal. Burnett-Kurie also leads the league in points (16).

The Herons will travel to St. Lawrence on Oct. 6 for a league game at 4 p.m.
