Herons ranked 5th in region

September 26, 2006

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith soccer team is ranked fifth in the New York State region for the second straight week by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). The NSCAA rankings are voted on weekly by coaches across the country. Currently, the Herons hold a 5-3-0 overall record and are 2-0-0 in Liberty League action.

William Smith opened its conference schedule last weekend with wins over Vassar 2-0, and Rensselaer 3-0. Senior Alex Rieben (Guilford/Guilford, Conn.) and sophomore Rayza Santiago (Webster Schroeder/Webster, N.Y.) combined for four of the five Heron goals. Each scored a goal in both games. Sophomore Katie Compton (The Loomis Chaffee School/West Hartford, Conn.) also added a goal in the win over the Red Hawks.

The William Smith offense has been lead by junior Laura Burnett-Kurie (Oyster River/Durham, N.H.), who also leads the league in goals (6) and points (14). Rieben has also been a strong contributor, totaling four goals and eight points on the season.

The Herons return to action on Sept. 30 when they host Hamilton for a Liberty League game at 2 p.m.
