GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith soccer team defeated Vassar College 2-0 in its first Liberty League game of the season today. The Herons improve to 4-3-0 overall, while the Brewers drop to 2-2-0.
Senior Alex Rieben (Guilford/Guilford, Conn.) netted William Smith’s first goal just over 11 minutes into the game. Rieben booted a long, high shot over Vassar goalkeeper Lisa Strumwasser (Santa Monica/Malibu, Calif.) after winning a Brewer throw-in.
After the break, junior Laura Burnett-Kurie (Oyster River/Durham, N.H.) headed in the Herons’ second goal, served to her off a corner kick from sophomore Rayza Santiago (Webster Schroeder/Webster, N.Y.). The goal marked league-leader Burnett-Kurie’s seventh of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Chittenango, N.Y.) made one save for William Smith, while counterpart Strumwasser tallied five saves for the Brewers.
The Herons return to action Sept. 23 when they host Rensselaer on Cozzens Field at 2 p.m.
