GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith soccer team handed Hamilton College its first loss of the season today, defeating the Continentals 3-1 on Cozzens Field. The Herons improve their overall record to 6-3-0 and are 3-0-0 in Liberty League action, while Hamilton drops to 5-1-1 and 2-1-0 in conference play.

Heron senior Heather Phillip (Cayuga/Kings Ferry, N.Y.) led the offense today with a goal and an assist, netting what would become the game-winner in the 69th minute.

Junior Laura Burnett-Kurie (Oyster River/Durham, N.H.) struck first to give the Herons a 1-0 lead 26 minutes into the first half, assisted by first-year Katelyn Tyson (Leland/San Jose, Calif.) and Phillip. William Smith carried the 1-0 lead into the break.

Phillip scored first in the second half, off a pass from first-year Julie Boardman-Brann (Niskayuna/Niskayuna, N.Y.). With less than 15 minutes left to play, first-year Hannah Vaughn (Marcellus/Marcellus, N.Y.) netted her first collegiate goal off a corner kick by junior Rayza Santiago (Webster Schroeder/Webster, N.Y.) to give William Smith a 3-0 lead.

Junior Megan Brousseau (Heidelberg American/Heidelberg, Germany) scored the lone goal for the Continentals in the 89th minute.

Senior goalkeeper Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Chittenango, N.Y.) tallied three saves for the Herons, while junior Caitlin McGilley (The Lawrenceville School/Northfield, N.J.) stopped five shots for Hamilton.

William Smith will be back in action on Oct. 6, when it travels to St. Lawrence for a Liberty League game at 4 p.m.
