Heron soccer wins national team award
January 11, 2007
GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College soccer team is one of seven teams in the country that recently received the 2006 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Ethics Gold Award. The Team Ethics award recognizes teams that demonstrate fair play, sporting behavior, and observe the Laws of the Game, as indicated by the number of yellow caution cards or red ejection cards they are shown by referees throughout the season. The Herons also won this award in 2000.
A total of 57 men’s and women’s teams earned either the Gold, Silver, or Bronze form of the Ethics Award. The seven gold award winners did not receive a yellow or red card all season, silver award winners (34) had a maximum of five yellow cards assessed and no red cards, while bronze winners (18) accumulated no more than 10 yellows and no reds.
The Herons, who closed out the season with an ECAC Upstate Championship and an 11-6-3 overall record, are joined on the gold list by six women’s teams, including Calvin College, Camden Community College, Hamilton College, Houghton College, Muskingum College, and Ohio Dominican University.
