Herons ranked 4th in NSCAA poll title

GENEVA, N.Y..-- After completing a 2-0 weekend at the Gettysburg College Tournament, the William Smith College soccer team has moved from seventh to fourth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll. The Herons hold the top spot in the Northeast Region.

William Smith opened its season with a 1-0 win over Wilmington College on Sept. 1. Junior forward Alyson Stachura (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) scored the only goal of the contest. Senior goalie Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Caledonia, N.Y.) stopped three shots for the victory. On Sept. 2, the Herons defeat Gettysburg 1-0 in double-overtime. Senior midfielder Liz Dedrick (Horseheads/Erin, N.Y.) netted the game-winner in the 108th minute. Cornwell notched her second shutout of the year with another three save performance.

William Smith opens its home schedule in the Heron Cup this weekend. The Herons face NYU on Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. On Sept. 9, William Smith hosts No. 10 Ohio Wesleyan University at 1:30 p.m.
