Herons 6th in NSCAA poll

October 9, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.--After two wins last week, the William Smith College soccer team moved up a spot to sixth place in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III poll. The Herons are still No. 1 in the New York Region poll.

On Oct. 3, William Smith came from behind to beat Nazareth College 2-1 on the road. Junior forward Maria Paoff (East Syracuse-Minoa/East Syracuse, N.Y.) tied the game and junior forward Alyson Stachura (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) scored the game-winner for the Herons third straight win over the Golden Flyers. At home against Hamilton College on Oct. 6, William Smith edged the Continentals, 1-0, in a defensive battle. Paoff scored the contest's lone goal as the Herons went on to their seventh straight win. The junior's play earned Paoff the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association's Player of the Week award.

William Smith (10-1-0, 4-0-0 UCAA) returns to action on Oct. 12, when they host St. Lawrence at 4 p.m. Last season, the Saints edged the Herons, 2-1 in Canton.
