August 17. 2001

GENEVA, N.Y..-- The William Smith College soccer team is ranked seventh in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason poll. The Herons are one of only three ranked teams from New York State.

William Smith enters the 2001 season with 19 returning letterwinners. Among the returnees are first-team Regional All-American senior goalkeeper Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Caledonia, N.Y.), second-team Regional All-American junior forward Kristin Perrigo (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) and the 2000 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Rookie of the Year, junior forward Alyson Stachura (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.).

After a 4-4 start in 2000 the Herons caught fire, losing only once in their last 11 games, en route to a 14-5-1 record. The Herons made their 14th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and captured their fourth NCAA Regional Championship in eight years.

William Smith opens the season on Sept. 1, when it takes on Wilmington College at 11:30 a.m., in the first round of the Gettysburg Tournament.
