September 12, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.--After splitting its Heron Cup games last weekend, the William Smith College soccer team dropped to eighth place in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll. The Herons are still ranked No. 1 in the Northeast Region.

On Sept. 8, William Smith defeated New York University 3-1. First-year midfielder Christine Curry (Pittsfield/Pittsfield, Mass.) opened the scoring just 32 seconds into the contest with her first goal as a Heron. First-year forward Michelle Smith's (G. Ray Bodley/Fulton, N.Y.) first career goal made it a 2-0 game late in the first half. Senior midfielder Lauren Wendell (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine) put the game out of reach early in the second half with a goal, as William Smith went on to the 3-1 win.

In the second round, Ohio Wesleyan University handed the Herons their first loss of the season in double-overtime. Trailing 1-0 with just over two minutes left in regulation, William Smith got the equalizer, as Smith netted her second goal, sending the contest to overtime. The Battling Bishops finally got the game-winner in the second overtime period for the 2-1 victory. Senior goalie Leah Corwell (Wheatland-Chili/Caledonia, N.Y.) made seven saves for the Herons.

William Smith opens their Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association schedule this weekend. The Herons travel to Vassar on Sept. 14, and Rensselaer on Sept. 15.
