Four Herons named first-team All-Region
December 4, 2002 GENEVA, N.Y. The National Soccer Coaches Association of American recently announced the 2002 Division III Womens Northeast All-Region teams. William Smith seniors Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Scottsville, N.Y.), Kristin Falzarano (Morristown/Morris Plains, N.J.), Amy Pendergast (East Syracuse-Minoa/East Syracuse, N.Y.), and Alyson Stachura (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) all received first-team honors putting them in consideration for All-America accolades. A 2002 first-team All-UCAA selection and 2001 first-team All-American, Cornwell started 23 of the 24 games in goal for the Herons this season, boasting a 0.66 goals against average, including nine shutouts. In her four-year career, Cornwell has made 248 saves, allowing just 52 goals for a 0.59 goals against average. The 2002 UCAA Player of the Year, Falzarano contributed both offensively and defensively from her outside midfield position. A dangerous attacker from the flanks, she notched seven goals and six assists on the year, including three game-winning goals.A defensive stalwart and four-year starter for the Herons, Pendergast was the leader of a young backline that limited opponents to just 16 goals in 24 games, including 12 shutouts. A first-team All-UCAA selection, she helped the Heron defense shut down a potent Wheaton (Mass.) offense to launch William Smith into the NCAA Semifinals. A first-team All-UCAA selection, Stachura paced the William Smith offense with 11 goals and two assists, including two game-winners. The lone Heron on the NCAA All-Tournament team, the senior forward was also a member of the 2001 Northeast All-Region squad. Finishing with a 17-4-3 record, the Herons had an outstanding season earning their third consecutive New York Region Championship and advancing all the way to the NCAA Semifinals. Making its sixth appearance in the round of four, William Smith fell to eventual national champion Ohio Wesleyan 3-0. |
