Guarino joins Heron soccer staff

Mary Guarino

August 21, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College Soccer Head Coach Aliceann Wilber recently announced the appointment of Mary Guarino, who will serve as the Herons assistant this season. Guarino replaces Sue Willard ’99, who joined the women’s soccer staff at Bucknell University over the summer.

Guarino, a 2000 graduate of Boston College, joins the Herons after spending last season as a forward for the W-League’s Boston Renegades. The 2002 W-League Champs posted 19-1-1 record, including a 3-0 victory over the Charlotte Lady Eagles in the championship match.

When she wasn’t playing last season, Guarino served as an assistant coach for the Charles River United Club Soccer team, a girls team for 16-year-olds and 17-year-olds.

“I’m excited to benefit from Mary’s experiences at Boston College and with the Renegades,” Wilber said. “She had a prolific career and we hope to take advantage of that.”

During her playing career at B.C., Guarino led the Eagles in scoring as a senior captain, netting a team best 13 goals and seven assists for 33 points. A 1999 second-team All-BIG EAST selection, she also garnered NSCAA All-Northeast honors. Guarino totaled 33 goals, 21 assists, and 87 points during her four year career at Boston College.

Following graduation, Guarino, who holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing, spent two seasons on the Eagles’ coaching staff. As an assistant coach, she helped lead Boston College to back-to-back BIG EAST Tournament semifinal appearances and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2001.

An active member of the Boston community, Guarino volunteered more than 400 hours with Athletes in Service to America. The program works with students in inner-city schools, striving to increase academic success and reduce violence.

William Smith opens its 2003 slate on Sept. 3, hosting Geneseo on Cozzens Field at 4 p.m. The Herons return 19 letterwinners, including six starters, from last season’s squad that posted a 17-4-3 mark, advancing to the NCAA Semifinals.
