Battling Bishops, Dutchwomen win in OT

September 9, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.--The Ohio Wesleyan University (4-1-0) and Union College (1-1-0) soccer teams each garnered 2-1 double-overtime victories in the second round of the Heron Cup. The Battling Bishops downed William Smith College (3-1-0), while the Dutchwomen defeated New York University (2-2-0).

In the early game, Ohio Wesleyan held the edge in play for much of the first half, but couldn't solve the Herons' senior goalie Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Caledonia, N.Y.). Cornwell made five of her seven saves in the first half. The Bishops finally scored midway through the second half. In the 70th minute, the junior midfielder Lindsey Bland (Hilliard Darby/Columbus, Ohio) buried a pass from senior forward Katy Sturtz (Columbus Watterson/Worthington, Ohio) for a 1-0 Ohio Wesleyan lead. As time ran down, William Smith turned up the pressure. In the 81st minute, junior forward Kristin Perrigo (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) was robbed in close by Bishops' sophomore goalie Tiffany Soggs (North Royalton/North Royalton, Ohio). Seven minutes later the Herons netted the equalizer. First-year forward Michelle Smith (G. Ray Bodley/Fulton, N.Y.) lofted a pass from sophomore forward Stephanie Leveille (Ossining/Ossining, N.Y.) over Soggs' head and into the net with 2:32 left in regulation.

In the first overtime period, Sturtz appeared to give Ohio Wesleyan the victory in the 100th minute, but was ruled offsides. Sturtz was only delayed though, as she scored the game-winner in the second overtime in the 113th minute. With a goal and an assist on the day, Sturtz claimed the Heron Cup's Most Valuable Player award. Soggs made two saves for the win. Senior back Felicia Crump (Lawrenceville School/Marlboro, N.J.), junior back Amy Pendergast (East-Syracuse Minoa/East Syracuse, N.Y.) and Perrigo represent the Herons on the All-Tournament Team.

The tournament's final match up was no less dramatic. Union grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute on a goal from first-year forward Molly Flanagan (Loomis Chaffee/Simsbury, Conn.). After the goal, momentum shifted to NYU. The Violets weren't able to take advantage of several quality scoring opportunities in the first half.

NYU kept up its play in the second half and was rewarded with a penalty kick in the 86th minute. First-year midfielder Natalie Shaheen (Seaholm/Birmingham, Mich.) fired a shot to the left of the Dutchwomen's junior goalie Carolyn Stead (Deering/Portland, Maine) to tie the score at 1-1 and send the game to extra time.

In overtime, Union took control of the game, outshooting the Violets 3-2 in the first overtime and 5-0 in the second. The Dutchwomen finally put the game away in the 118th minute as sophomore forward Stephanie Mole (Newton North/Newton, Mass.) finished a pass from Flanagan. Stead finished with nine saves for Union, while sophomore goalie Becca Giefer (Mahtomedi/Mahtomedi, Minn.) made six stops for NYU.
