Gettysburg victorious over NYU in annual Heron Cup

September 6, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—Junior midfielder Liz Feldhusen (Acton-Boxborough Regional/Acton, Mass.) netted a goal in the 85th minute to lead Gettysburg College past 23rd-ranked New York University 2-1 in women’s soccer action in the annual Heron Cup at William Smith College. Gettysburg improves to 1-1, while the Violets fall to 1-2 on the season.

NYU started the game strong, pressing the Bullets early in the game, but were unable to get on the board despite having quality opportunities. Gettysburg weathered the storm well and grabbed the lead in the 41st minute when first-year midfielder Katie Myers (Western Voc. Tech. School/Randallstown, Md.)Kristin Igusky (Holy Name/Sinking Springs, Pa.) and slipped it past the Violet goalie for a 1-0 lead.

The second half proved to me much of the same, as neither team could create good scoring chances. Holding a one-goal advantage, the Bullets gave themselves a cushion when Feldhusen notched her first goal of the season with just over five minutes left. NYU didn’t stop attacking and cut the deficit to one in the 89th minute with a beautiful shot into the upper ninety from first-year Danielle Summers (Mountain Ridge/Glendale, Ariz.). However, it proved to be too little too late as Gettysburg held on in the final minute to win the contest.

Bullets goalie Katie Simmons (Guilderland/Altamont, N.Y.) and NYU keeper Alison Myers (Lakeside Upper School/Bellevue, Wash.) both went the distance, pulling in four stops.

Gettysburg will face Oswego State in the second day of the Heron Cup on Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. The Violets will match up with fourth-ranked William Smith in the afternoon contest slated for 2 p.m.
