Herons, Bishops triumph in Heron Cup openers

September 8, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.--The fourth-ranked William Smith College Herons and the 10th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops both picked up victories in the opening round of the Heron Cup. William Smith charged out to a 2-0 halftime lead and won by a 3-1 count over New York University, while Ohio Wesleyan tallied a goal in each half of a 2-0 blanking of Union College.

The Herons (3-0-0) wasted little time attacking NYU, scoring just 32 seconds into the contest. First-year Christine Curry (Pittsfield/Pittsfield, Mass.) notched her first collegiate goal off a touch from sophomore Stephanie Leveille (Ossining/Ossining, N.Y.). William Smith extended its lead just before the break when first-year Michelle Smith (G. Ray Bodley/Fulton, N.Y.) picked up her first collegiate goal thanks to an assist from junior Maria Paoff (E. Syracuse-Minoa/E. Syracuse, N.Y.). Senior Lauren Wendell (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine) gave the Herons a three-goal advantage in the 49th minute, finishing a pass from junior Kristin Perrigo (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.).

The Violets (2-1-0) got their lone goal from Lauren Henkel off a nifty through pass by Laura DePeters. NYU's Becca Giefer made nine saves in 80 minutes, while Samantha Kopacz made two stops in relief.

Senior Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Caledonia, N.Y.) made one save to earn her third win of the season.

In the Heron Cup's second contest, Ohio Wesleyan (3-1-0) controlled the tempo of the game, outshooting Union 17-10, including an 11-1 first half advantage. The Battling Bishops got unassisted goals from Erika Howland in the 38th minute and Toni Frissora in the 76th minute to post the 2-0 victory.

Tiffany Soggs earned the win with two saves, while Carolyn Stead made four saves for the Dutchwomen (0-1-0).

William Smith will square off with Ohio Wesleyan at 11 a.m., on Sun., Sept. 9. NYU and Union will battle in the day's second game at 1:30 p.m.
