Heron soccer team invited to ECAC tourney

November 10, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College soccer team will play in the postseason for the 17th consecutive season. The Herons accepted an invitation to the six-team ECAC Northeast Women’s Soccer Tournament this afternoon.

Third seeded William Smith (12-5-2) will face No. 6 SUNY Plattsburgh (14-6) at 1 p.m., on Nov. 12. The game will be played on either Cozzens Field or William Smith Field. That determination will be made tomorrow.

The winner will play No. 2 SUNY Geneseo on Nov. 15 at top-seeded Nazareth College.

Senior forward Kristin Perrigo (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) leads the Herons in scoring with seven goals and an assist. An exceptionally clutch performer, the first-team All-Upstate Collegate Athletic Association selection has scored half of William Smith’s game winning goals this season. Sophomore midfielder Steph Gridley (Auburn/Auburn, N.Y.) has also reached double digits in points for the Herons, recording five goals and three assists.

Defensively, first-year goalie Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Canestota, N.Y.) was named the UCAA Rookie of the Year following an outstanding season that has seen her record nine shutouts, while posting a 0.83 goals against average. Dudley also benefited from the veteran play of first-team All-UCAA sophomore back Seraphine Hamilton (The Peddie School/Trenton, N.J.).

The Cardinals finished third in the State University of New York Athletic Conference regular season and lost in the semifinals of the conference’s championship tournament. Anita Salinas and Katie Remus pace the Plattsburgh attack with 18 points each. Brianna Falvey has started 16 games in goal for the Cardinals, earning a 7-7-1 record with a 2.60 goals against average.
