Herons and Dutchwomen win in Heron Cup openers

September 14, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith College Herons and the Union College Dutchwomen both garnered wins during the opening day of the annual Heron Cup. William Smith triumphed in a double-overtime match, beating the NYU Violets 3-2, while Union netted three goals in the second half for a 3-0 win over Montclair State.

The Herons and Violets battled through a scoreless first half, posting a combined six shots on goal. William Smith struck first in the second period as Maria Paoff (East Syracuse-Minoa/East Syracuse, N.Y.) fought through a crowd to head in Seraphine Hamilton’s (The Peddie School/Trenton, N.J.) corner kick.

The Violets answered in the 85th minute when Lauren Henkel (South Side/Rockville Centre, N.Y.) headed a corner kick by Jennifer Farkas (Plano/Plano, Texas) into the upper right hand corner. Just over one minute later, NYU took the lead as Henkel struck the ball beautifully into the left corner past William Smith goalie Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Scottsville, N.Y.).

Down 2-1 with less than a minute to go, Alyson Stachura (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford) took a ball from Pria Young (Council Rock/Richboro, Pa.) and made a perfect cut past the NYU goalie to tie the game and send it into overtime. Still knotted at two with only four minutes left in the second overtime, senior Kristin Falzarano (Morristown/Morris Plains, N.J.) ripped a shot from the right side of the box into the upper-left corner to give the Herons their second win of the season.

Cornwell played solid in goal, grabbing two saves and earning her second win of the campaign.

Amidst a steady rain in the Heron Cup’s second match of the day, Union was able to control much of the game, outshooting Montclair 12-6. Scoreless in the first period of play, the Dutchwomen finally got on the board in the 63rd minute when Brittany Cressman (Duxbury/Duxbury, Mass.) slotted a cross into the left corner. Union sealed the win just two minutes later when Erika Eisenhut (Mohawk/Mohawk, N.Y.) placed a shot into an open goal. Senior Abbie West (Wahcoviah/Dalton, Mass.) tallied the final goal for the Dutchwomen in the 85th minute.

Union will open up the second day of the tournament against NYU on at 11 a.m. on Sun., Sept. 15. The Herons will battle Montclair in the day’s second game at 2 p.m.
