Herons and Yellowjackets play to scoreless draw

September 17, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—The chances were there, but neither team could capitalize as William Smith College and the University of Rochester battled to a scoreless tie in women’s soccer action this evening. The Herons move to 3-1-1 on the season, while the 24th-ranked Yellowjackets stand at 4-2-1 overall.

William Smith and Rochester played an even opening 45 minutes, firing three and four shots, respectively, with each team having one good opportunity. The second stanza proved to be an entirely different story as the two squads created numerous scoring chances. The Yellowjackets wasted no time, getting their best chance of the game in the 55th minute when Emily Urbanczyk (Williamsville East/Williamsville, N.Y.) had her shot cleared off the line by junior defender Jenn Tibbens (Sherburne-Earlville/Sherburne, N.Y.). Just 30 seconds later senior forward Kristin Perrigo (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) had her shot stopped by Rochester goalie Adrianne Hulchanski (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.).

The Yellowjackets knocked on the door again in the 71st minute, but sophomore back Katie Murley (Auburn/Auburn, N.Y.) stepped in behind goalie Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Conastota, N.Y.) to make the save. With less than two minutes remaining sophomore Jamie Janowich (South Carroll/Sykesville, Md.) nearly gave the Herons the 1-0 lead, but her header flew just over the crossbar.

Rochester continued to apply the pressure in the first overtime, getting three shots off in the opening five minutes. Perrigo nearly scored her third game-winning goal of the season in the 100th minute but was denied again by Hulchanski. Heading into the final 10 minutes of the game, neither team could generate an attack, resulting in the scoreless tie.

Dudley collected eight saves for the Herons, while Hulchanski made six stops in 110 minutes of action.

Featuring the only two coaches in Division III women’s soccer to reach the 300-win plateau, Head Coach Aliceann Wilber’s Herons are 9-0-3 against the Yellowjackets, led by Terry Gurnett, since dropping a 2-1 decision on Sept. 5, 1992.

The Herons return to action on Sept. 20, when they host Ithaca College at 1 p.m.
