Stachura

September 18, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.--The William Smith College soccer team won its second game in three days, downing SUNY-Geneseo 4-1. Junior midfielder Alyson Stachura (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) scored two goals in 25 seconds to put the game away for the Herons.

Defense reigned early in the first half as both teams combined for only one shot in the first 11 minutes. William Smith finally got on the board in the 26th minute, as first-year forward Michelle Smith (G. Ray Bodley/Fulton, N.Y.) shot the ball high on Geneseo senior goalie Courtney Hall (Newfield/Coram, N.Y.). Hall initially made the save, but lost the ball as she fell back toward the goal.

In the second half, the Herons wasted no time doubling the lead. Junior forward Kristin Perrigo (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) put William Smith up 2-0 five minutes into the period, firing a rebound past Hall. In the 77th minute, Stachura scored twice to put the game out of reach on assists from junior back Amy Pendergast (East Syracuse-Minoa/East Syracuse, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Kristin Falzarano (Morristown/Morris Plains, N.J.), respectively. Three minutes later first-year back Alaina Smith (Honeoye Falls-Lima/Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) got the Blue Knights their only goal, finishing a pass from first-year forward Heather Trottier (Webster/Webster, N.Y.). It was too little too late as the Herons went on to the 4-1 win.

In goal senior Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Caledonia, N.Y.) made six saves for the win. Hall stopped five shots for Geneseo (4-3-0).

William Smith (5-1-0) hosts Ithaca College Sept. 22, at noon. The Bombers edged the Herons 1-0 in Ithaca last season.
