Herons collect five All-Conference awards

Nikki Dudley

November 7, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Upstate College Athletic Association awarded four William Smith College soccer players with All-UCAA honors this afternoon. Heron goalkeeper Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Canastota, N.Y) grabbed two awards, garnering Rookie of the Year and second-team honors.

Earning first-team honors for William Smith were senior forward Kristin Perrigo (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) and sophomore defender Seraphine Hamilton (The Peddie School/Trenton, N.J.), while sophomore midfielder Steph Gridley (Auburn/Auburn, N.Y.) joined Dudley on the second-team.

A five-time UCAA Rookie of the Week recipient, Dudley started every game for the Herons, playing all but 38 minutes over the course of the season, giving up just 13 goals. Her eight shutouts are the best in the league, while her 0.76 goals against average and .849 save percentage rank third.

A 2001 All-Region first-team selection, Perrigo leads the Herons with seven goals and one assist, including six game-winners. She has been a clutch performer all season as four of her six game-winning goals came in either overtime or in the final eight minutes of regulation. A two-time All-UCAA first-team honoree, Perrigo is tied for third on the William Smith career assists list with 23 and sits in the sixth spot on the career lists for points (93) and goals (35).

A two-year starter on the Heron backline, Hamilton anchors a defense that has allowed just 13 goals in 17 games for a 0.74 goals against average. She scored her first career goal in a win over Skidmore and leads all defenders with four points on a goal and two assists.

Dangerous from the left flank, Gridley is second on the team in scoring with five goals and three assists overall. Her four goals in conference play is the third most in the league. She recorded game-winning goals against Clarkson, No. 18 Nazareth, and Skidmore, and assisted on the game-winner in a 1-0 win over 20th-ranked Denison.

William Smith will travel to Union College for the UCAA Tournament on Nov. 8-9. The top-seeded Dutchwomen host St. Lawrence in the opening match on Nov. 8, at 11 a.m., and the second seeded Herons go up against third seed Hamilton at 1:30 p.m. The winners advance to the championship on Nov. 9, at 1 p.m., for the conference title and the accompanying automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
