September 29, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.--The William Smith College soccer team cruised past Skidmore College, 5-0, for its fifth straight win. Junior forwards Alyson Stachura (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) and Kristin Perrigo (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) combined for three goals and an assist.

The Herons dominated Skidmore from the opening whistle. Just over nine minutes into the contest Stachura netted the eventual game-winner off a corner kick by senior defender Summer Greiner (East Syracuse-Minoa/East Syracuse, N.Y.). Four minutes later Stachura made it a 2-0 game, burying a rebound off a Perrigo shot. In the 37th minute, junior back Amy Pendergast (East Syracuse-Minoa/East Syracuse, N.Y.) sent a shot high into the Thoroughbred goal for a 3-0 lead.

In the second half, William Smith kept up the barrage. At the 50:59 mark, Perrigo scored her fourth goal of the season on a pass from junior forward Maria Paoff (East Syracuse, N.Y.). Sophomore forward Stephanie Leveille (Ossining/Ossining, N.Y.) closed the scoring three minutes later with senior back Felicia Crump (Lawrenceville School/Marlboro, N.J.) registering the assist.

The Herons outshot Skidmore 36-3 on the day. In goal, senior Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Caledonia, N.Y.) and junior Melissa Buonvecchio (East Syracuse-Minoa/East Syracuse, N.Y.) split the shutout making two and one saves, respectively. First-year goalie Vicki Grilli (Londonberry, N.H.) stopped 10 shots for the Thoroughbreds (3-4-1, 0-4-1 UCAA).

William Smith (8-1-0, 3-0-0 UCAA) returns to action on Oct. 3, when they travel to Nazareth for a 4 p.m. contest.
