Herons edge Dutchwomen, 1-0

Stachura

September 28, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.--The seventh-ranked William Smith College soccer team got a first-half goal from junior forward Alyson Stachura (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) and made it stand up to defeat No. 12 Union College, 1-0. The win was the Herons fourth in a row, snapping the Dutchwomen's six-game win streak.

Union came out strong in the first half, firing its first three shots on goal, but was frustrated by William Smith senior goalie Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Caledonia, N.Y.).

The Dutchwomen's best chance of the contest came just three minutes into the game. Senior midfielder Tara Ilsley (Hicksville, N.Y.) got around the Heron defense, walked in and was robbed by a diving Cornwell. The momentum shifted after the shot and William Smith controlled the play for the rest of the half.

In the 26th minute, Stachura took advantage of a corner kick by junior midfielder Kristin Falzarano (Morristown/Morris Plains, N.J.) and headed the ball past Union goalie Carolyn Stead (Portland, Maine) for the game's lone goal.

In the second half, tough defense limited scoring opportunities as the Herons went on to the 1-0 victory. Cornwell made seven saves for her fourth shutout of the year. Stead stopped two shots for Union (6-2-0, 3-1-0 UCAA).

William Smith (7-1, 2-0 UCAA) completes the weekend series when they host Skidmore College on Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. The Herons upended the Thoroughbreds in Saratoga Springs last season, 2-0.
