Herons fall to Geneseo in soccer opener

September 3, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—Geneseo State University scored three goals in the opening stanza to hand the William Smith College soccer team a 3-0 loss in the season opener this afternoon on William Smith Field. Junior Lisa Zavada (Vestal/Vestal, N.Y.) netted the game-winner for the Blue Knights in the 17th minute off a blast from the top of the box.

Possession went back and forth in the opening 15 minutes, as both teams attacked but were unable to generate any good chances. Geneseo found a hole just over a minute later with a flighted ball behind the defense that resulted in the corner kick leading to the first score. The Blue Knights continued to get in behind the Heron defense successfully, getting goals from senior Logan Hadzicki (Portville/Portville, N.Y.) and Nicole Santariello (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.) in the 32nd and 35th minutes, respectively.

William Smith first-year Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Conastota, N.Y.) made her first career start in goal, grabbing six saves, while Geneseo keeper Jamie Waterman (Churchville-Chili/Rochester, N.Y.) made five stops to post the shutout.

The Herons return to action when they host the annual Heron Cup on Sept. 6-7. William Smith will face Oswego State at 11 a.m., on Sept. 6, and NYU at 2 p.m. the following afternoon.
