Herons soar past Golden Flyers

October 15, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.—Senior forward Alyson Stachura (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) scored three goals to lead the William Smith College soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Nazareth College. The Herons (8-2-3, 3-1-1 UCAA), coming off a 1-0 loss to Union College wasted little time, taking a 3-0 lead over the fifth ranked team in the nation in the first 18 minutes.

William Smith came out firing on all cylinders against the Golden Flyers in the opening 45 minutes. Senior midfielder Kristin Falzarano (Morristown/Morris Plains, N.J.) opened scoring in the sixth minute with a blast from 18 yards into the left upper ninety. Stachura scored what would be the game-winner less than three minutes later putting a Falzarano cross in the back of the net. Another goal in the 18th minute by Stachura sealed the game for the Herons. Down 3-0 at the beginning of the second half, the Golden Flyers’ Kala Caster (North Rose-Wolcott/Wolcott, N.Y.) notched a goal in the 49th minute to bring the game within two. That was as close as Nazareth would get as Stachura completed a perfect hat trick by scoring her third goal in the 78th minute.

Senior goalkeeper Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Scottsville, N.Y.) recorded four saves in 90 minutes, while Nazareth goalies Candace Hatcher (Dover/Dover Plains, N.Y.) and Jessica Cardot (Greece Olympia/Rochester, N.Y.) combined for two saves on the evening.

The Herons return to action on Oct. 19, traveling to Rochester for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
