Herons pummel Golden Knights, 9-0

GENEVA, N.Y.--The William Smith College soccer team crushed visiting Clarkson University, 9-0, to complete the weekend sweep. Junior forward Kristin Perrigo (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) led the Herons with a goal and four assists, while senior midfielder Lauren Wendell (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and junior forward Maria Paoff (East Syracuse-Minoa/East Syracuse, N.Y.) each chipped in two goals.

Perrigo set up Paoff to open the scoring just 2:23 into the game. Thirty-two seconds later, senior back Felicia Crump (Lawrenceville School/Marlboro, N.J.) assisted on Perrigo's only goal of the day. At the 13:04 mark, Wendell made it a 3-0 game on Perrigo's second assist. In the 18th minute, Paoff scored her second goal on Crump's second assist. First-year forward Michelle Smith (G. Ray Bodley/Fulton, N.Y.) closed out the first half on Perrigo's third assist with just over 16 minutes to go and William Smith led 5-0 nothing at the half.

The Herons kept up the barrage in the second half, scoring their sixth goal in the 52nd minute as Wendell notched her second of the day on Perrigo's fourth assist. William Smith tacked on three more goals for the 9-0 win. Junior forward Alyson Stachura (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) scored on an assist from senior midfielder Liz Dedrick (Horseheads/Erin, N.Y.) and junior back Amy Pendergast (East Syracuse-Minoa/East Syracuse, N.Y.) and first-year Caroline Wenzel (Geneva/Geneva, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring with unassisted goals.

In goal, senior Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Caledonia, N.Y.) and junior Melissa Buonvecchio (East Syracuse-Minoa/East Syracuse, N.Y.) split the shutout. Cornwell made two saves while junior Shaina Bellis (Spencerport/Spencerport, N.Y.) made nine stops for the Golden Knights (4-9-2, 0-6-1 UCAA).

The Herons (12-1-0, 6-0 UCAA) return to action on Oct. 16, when they travel to RIT to face the Tigers at 4 p.m. Last season, William Smith shutout RIT, 6-0, in Geneva.
