GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College soccer team received goals from four different players on its way to a 4-1 victory over Oswego State in the first round of the annual Heron Cup. The Herons improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Lakers drop to 2-1 this year.

Despite dominating the run of play in the opening minutes, the Herons fell behind 1-0 in the after Ashley Ann Maltagliati (East Islip/East Islip, N.Y.) converted a giveaway by William Smith in its defensive third of the field in the 11th minute. The Herons continued to attack and equalized 16 minutes later when junior midfielder Debbie Minarick (Wayne Valley/Wayne, N.J.) chipped Oswego goalie Alecia Scorsone (Geneseo/Geneseo, N.Y.) beautifully from 25 yards out.

William Smith came out of the break like gangbusters getting three shots off in the opening minutes. First-year Stephanie Bishop (F.D. Roosevelt/Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) put the Herons up for good in the 54th minute by taking a Minarick header and flicking it past the Laker goalie for her first career goal. Senior attacker Kristin Perrigo (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) added another score for the Herons 13 minutes later off a cross from sophomore Jamie Janowich (South Carroll/Sykesville, N.J.). William Smith received its fourth and final tally from sophomore Kate Warner (Gould Academy/Gloucester, Mass.) with 12 minutes left in the contest to put the game completely out of Oswego’s reach.

First-year goalie Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Conastota, N.Y.) went the distance for the Herons, making three saves, while Scorsone stopped four shots for the Lakers.

William Smith returns to action on Sept. 7, against 23rd-ranked New York University in the second round of the Heron Cup. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
