GENEVA, N.Y.--The William Smith College soccer team outgunned St. Lawrence University, 5-2, to extend its winning streak to eight. Junior forward Alyson Stachura (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) led the Herons with three goals.

Stachura got William Smith on the board just six minutes into the game, stepping around a defender and launching a high curving shot over Saints junior goalie Maggie O'Neil (Chenango Forks/Binghampton, N.Y.) for a 1-0 lead. First-year midfielder Nicole Lopez (AuSable Valley/Port Kent, N.Y.) tied the game five minutes later on a breakaway. Stachura answered 32 seconds later with her second goal of the day. In the 26th minute, senior midfielder Liz Dedrick (Horseheads/Erin, N.Y.) netted the eventual game-winner on a pass from senior midfielder Caroline Miller (Nottingham/Syracuse, N.Y.) to give the Herons a 3-1 lead. Lopez scored her second goal of the day in the 36th minute on a pass from first-year defender Liz Masterson (Steamboat Springs/Steamboat Springs, Colo.) and William Smith lead 3-2 at the half.

In the second half, senior midfielder Lauren Wendell's (Cape Elizabeth/Cape Elizabeth, Maine) header off a corner kick by Summer Greiner (East Syracuse-Minoa/Kirkville, N.Y.) made it a 4-2 game at the 47:25 mark. Eight minutes later Stachura completed her hat trick on a pass from junior forward Maria Paoff (East Syracuse-Minoa/East Syracuse, N.Y.) as the Herons went on to the 5-2 victory.

In goal, senior Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Caledonia, N.Y.) made one save for the win, while O'Neil finished with three saves for St. Lawrence (8-5-1, 3-3-0 UCAA).

William Smith outshot the Saints 14-6. William Smith (11-1-0, 5-0-0 UCAA) is back in action on Oct. 13, when it hosts Clarkson University at 2 p.m. Last season, the Herons beat the Golden Knights 7-0, in Potsdam.
