October 20, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.--The William Smith College soccer team hammered visiting SUNY-Cortland, 6-1, to stay undefeated on newly dedicated John H. Cozzens, Jr. '41 Memorial Field. The win was the Herons' 12th in a row.

In the 20th minute, senior back Summer Greiner (East Syracuse-Minoa/Kirkville, N.Y.) opened the scoring, blasting a long shot. Red Dragon senior goalie Ali Gray (Commack/Commack, N.Y.) deflected the ball into the cross bar, but it bounced down into the net for a 1-0 William Smith lead. Five minutes later, junior forward Kristin Perrigo (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) converted on a penalty kick to double the lead. At the 39:52 mark, junior forward Alyson Stachura (Pittsford-Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) made it a 3-0 game with her team-leading 14th goal of the season.

The Herons didn't let up in the second half, scoring three more goals. Perrigo struck again with her eighth goal of the year on an assist from junior midfielder Kristin Falzarano (Morristown/Morris Plains, N.J.) for a 4-0 lead. In the 69th minute, first-year forward Angela Bruno (West Genesee/Syracuse, N.Y.) broke up the shutout with Cortland's only goal of the day. First-year forward Michelle Smith (G. Ray Bodley/Fulton, N.Y.) scored on pass from junior back Amy Pendergast (East Syracuse-Minoa/East Syracuse, N.Y.) in the 82nd minute and junior midfielder Aimee Levesque (Loomis Chaffee School/Putney, Vt.) closed the scoring five minutes later, driving home a rebound for the 6-1 win.

In goal, senior Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Caledonia, N.Y.) made four saves in 80 minutes before giving way to junior goalie Melissa Buonvecchio (East Syracuse-Minoa/East Syracuse, N.Y.), who made one save in 10 minutes. Gray stopped 12 shots for the Red Dragons (11-6-1).

The Herons (15-1-0) close out the regular season when they host the University of Rochester on Oct. 24, at 3:30 p.m. Last season, William Smith beat the Yellowjackets, 1-0 in double-overtime, on the road.
